Getting an early lead was important. We needed our kids to believe that we could get to Roth. He is a very accomplished pitcher. We were looking to scratch out runs any way we could. That one run provided us with a bit of confidence and momentum.
It was a real good week for us. Our pitching held up and we looked good in key spots at the plate. With the amount of youth on our squad this year, we fully understand it is going to take time to get everybody on the same page. So far, we're real pleased with our start.
It's going to be an interesting season. We want to be as competitive as we can be on a game-to-game basis. I think this group is going to get better with each game. If we can remained composed and cut down on mistakes, we're going to be OK.
It was nice to be able to get Bert a bit of lead early in the game. We had a number of guys deliver key hits with men on base. That's the way our offense has to work this season. We need to get guys on, move them over, and deliver in clutch spots. We did a good job of that in this game.
Our defense wasn't there in this one. We made way too many mistakes that led to their runs.
He was outstanding. He had the lineup completely off-balance for the entire game. He mixed speeds extremely well and it his spots. We were pretty amazed at how well he handled himself against a team like Southern.
We've beaten a couple of very good teams. We're pretty happy with the way the kids have performed. We're a young team and still feeling our way through.
He struggled a little with his control also, but managed to avoid getting hurt by the walks. It is still early in the season and our pitchers are a little inexperienced. In time, they are going to get better and be around the plate more.
He throws a lot of first pitch strikes. He doesn't fall behind in the count and that allows him to go to the off speed pitches. When his curve is working it makes his fastball look 10 miles per hour faster.
He had a real good last inning for us. He made good pitches when he needed to.
