Surface mining has really gotten a bad rap over the past 50 years. They'll see a nicely done reclamation project. It's really a diverse habitat. It's because of the reclamation work that we can have elk.

The farther you get toward the spring, the harder it is to see the big bulls. They form bachelor groups and sort of keep to themselves.

The majority of the time it's pretty easy to get well within 100 yards of some animals. There's only been one time in the past three years that we didn't see elk. And it's no surprise to see a herd of 50 or 60 elk at one time.
