The whole boat has to be painted. Especially the bottom of the boat; you have to put on anti-fouling paint to keep marine life such as mussels from growing on it.
You could leave the boat in the water, but the snow and ice is hard on it. And then you have to be careful of the ice in the water.
People's appetites for big boats continue to grow. I don't think it's a conspicuous consumption phenomena. I think it reflects the fact that people want to go further and further on their boats; they want to be independent from land.
When the work is done, I go off and I live on my boat for awhile, and I can't think of anything that makes me happier. It all depends on where your values are. Sometimes I ask myself why I do all this work, but once I get out on the water, I know.
