We're in good shape for now, but there's still going to be this anxiety, where people are looking over their shoulders, waiting to see what's coming next on the national level.

We need a spark, I just don't see what there is in next week's numbers that's going to do it.

Next week is the big one for earnings. You've got Microsoft, Intel, all the banks.

I would say in the next few weeks we can kind of grind in place, maybe a little to the upside. Maybe we'll get through the pre-announcement period without too much trouble, and then we'll get into third-quarter earnings in October, and they should be mostly in line.

I think we'll consolidate around these levels, maybe pull back a bit next week, but nothing much.

We're drifting, and we're probably going to keep drifting for the next few weeks. But that's OK, there are positive developments out there. Oil prices seem to be under control, and I'm more encouraged about the second-quarter earnings than I have been in a while.

There are a lot of positives -- Intel said some good things; Greenspan is saying that oil prices are a wild card, which we knew already, but that inflation is under control. But we're mixed, bouncing around today (Wednesday). You've got big names coming out in the next day and you need some of these giants to say tech is improving.

We've gone up nine days in a row. I think we're probably in for a brief pullback next week, probably in response to the Fed statement.

There's nothing much next week in terms of earnings, and not really hugely influential economic news, but the bias is still pretty positive, and I think we're likely to grind higher.

The wording of the statement will be important, and then you've also got Cisco and Dell reporting next week.

There's a lot of earnings for next week, but I don't see what's going to give us a lift. If the earnings have been good so far, and stocks have fallen anyway, what could the next wave of earnings do for us, even if they are positive?

The big hurdles next week are the Fed meeting Tuesday and the jobs report Friday. The market reaction to those events may set the tone for the month and determine whether we'll see a November rally.

I'm maybe more optimistic for the end of the year, but for the next few weeks, I think we are still in these treacherous waters. We're just going to have to grin and bear it, and then maybe we'll see a run up in November and December.

I guess after all this selling you could see an oversold bounce next week, and some up days here and there in early February. What's concerning is that there doesn't seem to be anything to lift us on a more consistent basis.
