Perhaps the most useful lesson which has come out of the work on penicillin has been the demonstration that success in this field depends on the development and coordinated use of technical methods.
Nature makes penicillin; I just found it.
They are getting a little help, but nothing near the amount of help that would make a difference. I liken it to having a dose of penicillin for one person and distributing it to 10 people. No one gets cured.
I don't think that anybody believes that by giving somebody penicillin we're playing God, ... but we have to ask the question about how far it's appropriate to go in extending life.
