It's amazing to me that 16- and 17-year-olds are treated as adults no matter what. If we make a big enough presence and have enough people, maybe the General Assembly will listen.
When you treat a kid as an adult, they start to act as an adult in the way they commit crimes.
People assume it's being tough on crime, but what you're doing is throwing these kids away. Studies show that kids who are put into the adult system re-offend quicker and more seriously.
It's always more expensive to do something than nothing. But in the long run, it will be less expensive, because you're not creating as many lifetime criminals and you're helping more kids to become successful members of society.
They're not adults. They're kids. There's a lot of reasons why Connecticut shouldn't be so far behind the rest of the country.
