The big issue facing any school is very simple. It boils down to one word - excellence.

I don't know what his agenda is. I have to listen to what he has to say. I vote for the man who I think is going to do the best job for the state.

That involves making sure that you recruit and retain and pay properly the best teachers. I think that means making sure that you devote a very high percentage of your limited resources to actual teacher-to-pupil instruction - rather than on administration and various support services. I think that means you create through the proper administration of discipline an atmosphere that is most conducive to learning.

I would like to offer whatever I have to offer as a help. I've spent most of my time in Staunton working with programs for kids. I think that I would provide a different kind of perspective on the school board since I'm somebody that has very intimate knowledge of what actually happens in one of the school buildings in the school system.

Just looking at the process, and seeing how things worked, I just thought that I would like to get involved.

With the exception of the March school-board meeting, I think that I would be more available than many other people who work more normal kind of jobs.

I think that is unprofessional, I think that is unethical and I am aghast that somebody would do that. This is a closed club, and they don't want anybody in their club, and that's what this e-mail says.

The Monday after Selection Sunday, I'm scrambling to learn all the teams that I'll have to do later in the week. And then I'm out on the road.

I think that our public schools sometimes get a bad rap - and sometimes deservedly so. I think the goal of every school system has to be excellence.
