Wow. What a beautiful-looking car. I have obviously been testing the MP4- 21 quite a bit already but seeing the car like this is something else.
My two days at this week's test were focused on Michelin selection for the Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place in a month from now. We have been evaluating the prime and options with Michelin, with some interesting results, and have been able to conclude the process today.
I would have been able to finish higher up had things gone our way.
I feel well prepared for the long season ahead. But as always there is a lot of work still to be done.
The pace of the car was down. We had to open up the car for cooling and we lost a lot of performance.
I think the race was won on the first turn. From there on it was a matter of the strategy and a question of how hard you can push.
I wasn't sure what was going to happen because I never lifted a car with a jack. I thought, 'Oh, it's kind of heavy.' So I went harder, and I thought I was going to land up on my ass. I didn't, so I'm pretty glad about that!
Unless we want to finish about 10th or 12th then we should think about changing (the engine) to be honest.
We seem to have found the perfect balance between speed and grip.
We were quick here today and are looking strong and consistent, so it is a positive start to the weekend. There is still a long way to go, and we have to remain reliable throughout the weekend to achieve the result that our times today promise.
At the moment I'm concentrating more on this season, on the fact that I'm here at McLaren.
Ron (Dennis) said he's not going to make a decision on drivers yet.
It will be interesting to see what it (the engine) does. I think if it is competitive and everything goes well we should be able to fight them in the race. The only way to beat them is to be a bit smarter in the race.
I like having kids around. I want to see them grow up, so Sebastian travels with us, the next one will as well.
I just need to get myself into a position where I can secure my best option for the future. I have to look around and see what offers the best prospect, whether or not that is staying with McLaren. When I finally see the option I am happy with, I will take it.
The gap to Renault is very close, there are a lot of points still to be won and the car feels fast, so we shall see.
