Search engines compile a lot of data on what we search for and much of what we search for is personal. Many people fear that the government wants to do data mining. It'll be interesting to see how much of all this ultimately becomes a political issue.

The tremendous growth in search underscores it as a fundamental advertising and public relations medium that has to be considered alongside other ad and PR venues, rather than being an afterthought. The growth also makes the New York event all the more critical for anyone and everyone looking to gain further traction in this surging market. Those not already in it are falling further behind. You could add a billion pages about Britney Spears and that doesn't mean the quality of results will be any better. There have been times when other search indexes have expanded, and the results have actually gotten worse.

Users will be the best judge of which search engine is the most appropriate,

They have lots of information. They know what people are clicking on. They know what people are searching for.

While the search marketing space grows, it's hard to get good people trained, If they're good, others want to poach them.

I'm interested to see if the search companies who handed over info to the feds lose any market share and/or total number of searches in the future due to sharing data with the government.

Nothing suggests that they wanted to know who did the searches in any way. Having said this, such a move absolutely should breed some paranoia. They didn't ask for data this time, but next time, they might.

We often search for private things that we may prefer not be seen by others, even if the possibility is fairly remote. At minimum, police your own desktop by clearing history. That's the most vulnerable part, I'd say.
