We started out kind of slow but we finished strong.
We faced two of the best pitchers we've faced all year. We just didn't put the ball in play.
We're still looking to get clutch hits and we've had some at times. So far we've been able to answer when teams get runs.
(Lee) threw his fastball well. They swung the bats well still but Lee did a good job.
Lee did a good job and threw a lot of strikes.
I wouldn't consider it an off night necessarily. But Charlie just didn't have his usual stuff. But Lee came in and threw well.
If we can just play better defense. We can be a pretty decent club.
He did a great job. He kept them off balance all night. They had maybe one hard hit all night. They were just overmatched.
He had a few nerves. He ended up with runners on second and third with no outs and got out of it in the sixth.
We're pretty focused. We've talked about our goals since the year began. We put it on our t-shirts, that we don't want to leave any doubt who's the best this year. Our goal is to win it all.
We swung the bats well tonight. And that is important. Its good to get that first win as well.
He's a kid with a super amount of potential.
He just didn't have his good stuff. He didn't have his usual velocity.
(Hammond's) guy left it up and Lee just got around.
I think it caught our attention. We have to do more than just get off the bus to get a win.
Our team average is over .400 in district. And we seem to be getting the timely hits.
When the bats come alive like that, it's pretty nice.
We jumped on them early. I just wish we could have scored some more runs.
We have a laid back group of kids.
We probably have our best defensive lineup when Charlie is on the mound.
We played well. Lee pitched well and we played good defense behind him.
There are a lot of people involved and a lot of good players. I don't want to take the credit for it. It speaks a lot about this area and the strength of this program.
We just have a lot of kids out. We're trying to work them all and give them all a chance.
We always seem to answer when the other team scores. That's pretty good. We're swinging the bat pretty well right now.
We just need to keep this going. We just want to hit the ball and make plays like we've been doing. We didn't give up a bunch of walks which is always nice to see going into the playoffs.
We feel very confident with those two on the mound. Both can throw in the upper 80s and throw it right by 80-percent of high school hitters.
A break here or a break there can hurt you. Last year we got some of those.
Its just one game at a time. Like I always say.
It was good to come back after that loss and swing the bats.
It's a fine line. But I think we're still pretty well-focused.
It's always great when you can score a couple of runs early and set the tone.
It's hard with tournaments when you're playing four games a week and you don't know where everybody's playing yet. But when we settle into two or three district games a week, we should know by then.
It was nice to jump out early but sometimes when we don't do that we don't score after.
It was a great experience to play a close ball game like that. We saw two pitchers who threw very well.
Shawn really did a good job. He's been battling a sore arm, and he'd thrown around 90 pitches and we could see he lost some zip on his fastball.
(Shawn had a few jitters early - walked the first two he faced - but he settled down. He's our no. three starter and he's swinging the bat well too.
The kids knew we played bad the day before and they stepped up.
Independence is a good hitting team. This is a big win for us.
His breaking ball worked really well. Seven of his 12 strikeouts, the batter went down looking, didn't swing. A lot of those were on his breaking ball.
But if we want to be the best we have to beat the best.
(Charlie) is a little more poised and confident this year. Not that he's cocky, but he knows that if he throws his fastball for strikes, he'll be successful.
He struggled a little. But that ended quickly.
He probably threw more pitches than we would have liked. We would have put somebody else in, but he had a no hitter going, so we let him have it.
