The actions of the South Dakota Legislature to silence the voice of Native American voters have been shameful. We are pleased that the Supreme Court has put this matter to rest, but we are saddened that state officials would rather file costly appeals than obey the law and protect the rights of all South Dakota citizens.

The treatment received by Native American students in Winner and throughout the region is completely different than that of their white counterparts. These experiences demonstrate the reasons why Native American children so often fail to reach graduation -- hostility of peers, discrimination of school officials and knee-jerk police involvement.

South Dakota should focus its efforts on ensuring that women have access to the full range of reproductive health services, including contraception and medically accurate sexuality education, instead of banning abortion. We would do well to focus our efforts on prevention instead of passing laws that not only threaten women's health and lives but are also blatantly unconstitutional.

This is the first thing that you're contemplating putting into your Bill of Rights that restricts rather than protects or expands rights.

Education is one of the wisest investments we can make in America's future. The aid elimination provision is unfair and heavy-handed and should be taken off the books completely.

The bill is so facially unconstitutional, the likelihood that it will not be challenged in court is practically nil.
