Like anything else, it's a lot of on-the-job training. The more experience you have, the more you see and the better you are at what you do. It's no different than if somebody was trying to coach in the Super Bowl.
I credit (Mahaffey) with truly teaching me how to caddie. It was a great experience working with him, learning everything from the way he plays and thinks to his philosophy for playing a par 3.
