We really haven't played well the last two weeks. I haven't seen that same energy we had week one and that's a concern for me.
One thing we want to do is eliminate the big play. I think our coaching staff and players understand (Madera) is going to score their points. We just can't give up the big plays like we did last year.
I don't think we played real well up front at times last week. If we play that way this week it could be a long night. It's a challenge, but this group seems to respond well to challenges.
I think that's one of the things we can be better at. We've got to get the ball in the end zone when we're in the red zone.
I think everybody in the league knew going into this season that it was going to be a strong year. We're trying to stay focused on our Week 2 opponent (Sonora), but it was still impressive to see what the league did.
I think this week a lot of things will unfold that could surprise people. I don't think anybody in their right mind could predict the outright champion.
When you get to weeks six and seven, the team that is still getting better each week, committing less turnovers and making less mistakes, is the team that's going to win league. The teams with the best records right now may not be the best teams and I'm saying that about our guys too.
We had such a great effort. I know a lot of people in the Central Section have high hopes for that Madera team. But our guys came through.
They're a better team than last year. In certain spots they may not be as athletic as they were last year, but they're a better team and they run the Wing-T very well.
They're a very good team that had a bad week last week. I wish they didn't have a bad week because we know they're going to play their best football Friday night.
It's a battle as a coach and a player. Just getting to Friday nights are hard. It wears you out. Sometimes you have to reach down deep and get a little more to pull you through. And this is only the first week of league.
The biggest thing is we're definitely not looking at them as an 0-2 team. They've had some tough breaks in both their losses and they definitely could have won both their games.
It's definitely going to be a challenge. But, that's all right. It gives us a chance to evaluate our guys and how they step up to the challenge. We want to see how our guys respond.
It's tough as a coach because you think his dream is shattered at that point. The way Sidney responded to the injury told me a lot about his character.
They have one guy that committed to Cal for good reason. I don't want to fuel the fire, but he may not be the best guy. They've got two other guys that are also very good.
That score just jumps out at you. I've never seen that.
